표현의 의미

"OO Mafia"는 특정 회사나 조직 출신들이 업계에서 강력한 영향력을 행사하며 서로 긴밀하게 연결된 네트워크를 형성하고 있을 때 사용하는 표현이다. 마피아처럼 끈끈한 유대관계를 가지고 있다는 뜻이고, 물론 실제 범죄 조직과는 전혀 관계없고, 오히려 긍정적이거나 중립적인 뉘앙스로 쓰인다.

표현의 유래

이 표현이 유명해진 건 "PayPal Mafia" 덕분인데, 2000년대 초반 PayPal 출신 임직원들이 회사를 떠난 후 Tesla(Elon Musk), LinkedIn(Reid Hoffman), YouTube(Chad Hurley, Steve Chen), Yelp(Jeremy Stoppelman) 등 혁신적인 기업들을 연달아 창업하면서 실리콘밸리를 재편했다.

이들이 서로 투자하고, 조언하고, 인재를 공유하는 모습이 마치 강력한 조직망 같다고 해서 Fortune 지가 2007년 "PayPal Mafia"라고 명명했다.
