많은 사람들에게 익숙한 buck의 또다른 뜻은 ‘dollar’이다.

그런데, 이 뜻을 아래 두 문장에 대입하면, 의미가 명확하지 않다.
결국 다른 뜻이 있다는 것을 예측할 수 있겠다.

그 달러가 여기에서 멈춘다? 그 달러를 넘긴다?
말이 이상하다.

여기에서의 차이점은 정관사 the 가 붙은 buck이다. the buck은 다른 의미를 가질 것이다.

the buck이 책임을 뜻하는 것은 포커게임으로부터 유래되었다고 한다. 포커 게임에서 딜을 해야 하는 사람의 순서를 표시하는 것을 buck이라 불렀는데, 자기 차례를 다른 사람에게 넘길 때를 일컬어 pass the buck이라고 한다. 그리고, 당시에 순서를 표시하기 위해 사용한 것이 buck(숫사슴)의 뿔로 손잡이를 만든 작은 칼이었는데, 이것을 줄여서 buck이라고 불렀다고 한다.

위와 같이 포커 게임에서 유래된 표현을 일종의 비유로
