회사에서도 하얀 코끼리라는 말을 들어본 적이 있다.

사실 하얀 코끼리 게임을 처음 하면서 겪어보긴 했지만, 영어 표현에도 마찬가지로 하얀 코끼리라는 표현을 엄연히 쓰고 있다.

영어 사전에서 뜻을 찾아보자.

- something that is expensive, or that costs a lot of money to keep in good condition, but that has no useful purpose and is no longer wanted
- something that somebody no longer wants but that is offered for sale to other people
- something that costs a lot of money but has no useful purpose

원래는 비싸지만, 이제 아무 쓸모 없는 것.

유지보수/관리에 엄청난 노력이 들어가지만, 효용성이 낮거나 아무도 원치 않는 것.

우리 말로 딱 맞아 떨어지는 표현을 굳이 찾자면, '애물단지'가 되겠다.

기원

태국, 버마, 캄보디아의 설화에 따르면 고대 국왕이 어떤 신하에게 하얀 코끼리를 선물한 것이 유래라고 알려졌다.

왕으로부터 하사받은 선물이니 잘 관리를 해야 하는데, 커다란 코끼리는 관리하기 쉬울 리가 없다.

기본적으로 많이 먹고 많이 싸는데다 왕의 하사품이니까.

그야말로, 엄청난 골칫거리일 수 밖에 없다.
