딕션의 뜻 살펴보기

'저 사람 딕션이 참 좋다'라는 평가를 방송에서 심심찮게 들을 수 있다. 딕션이란 영어로 무슨 뜻인지 한 번 살펴보자.

 

딕션의 어원

딕션은 우선 영어다. 영어로 diction이라고 쓴다.

단어의 구성을 살펴보면, 딕션 = diction = dict(to say) + ion(noun suffix)으로 구성된다.

dict는 라틴어를 기원으로 하고, to say, to speak의 의미를 지닌다.

사전에서는 diction을 다음과 같이 정의하고 있다.

• the manner in which words are pronounced

즉, 액센트, 억양, 목소리 등과 같이 화자의 의도가 잘 전달되도록 하는 것에 대한 것이다.

• style of speaking or writing as dependent on choice of words

또한 어떤 단어를 선택하느냐와도 관련이 있다.

 

 

 

 

 

dict(to say)를 어원으로 갖는 다른 단어들

• dictionary = dict(to say) + ion(noun suffix) + ary
  아마 dict가 들어간 단어중 우리한테 가장 익숙한 단어일 것이다. 단어를 모아놓은 것을 뜻한다.

a book that contains a list of words in alphabetical order and explains their meanings, or gives a word for them in another language

• verdict = ver(true) + dict(to say)
  진실(결과)을 말하는 것 = 판결문

an opinion or decision made after judging the facts that are given, especially one made at the end of a trial

• contradict = contra(againt) + dict(to say)
  반대되는 말을 하다 = 반박하다

(of people) to say the opposite of what someone else has said, or (of one fact or statement) to be so different from another fact or statement that one of them must be wrong

• predict = pre(before) + dic†(to say)
  미리 말하다 = 예견하다

to say that an event or action will happen in the future, especially as a result of knowledge or experience

• dictator = dict(to say) + ator(person, noun suffix)
  사람들에게 친숙한 단어일텐데, 독재자란 뜻이다. 내가 말할테니 다른 사람들은 따르라고 하는 의미로 볼 수 있다.

a leader who has complete power in a country and has not been elected by the people

국민에 의해 선출되지 않았으나 모든 권력을 가진 사람이라 정의되고 있다.

• dictation: dict(to say) + ate(시키다) + ion
  말하는 것을 쓰게 하다 = 받아쓰기

to speak something aloud for a person or machine to record what is said, so that it can be written down
